Newcastle United vs Wolves preview, team news and predicted lineup

Newcastle United host Wolverhampton Wanderers at St James’ Park on Saturday, with both sides searching for their first Premier League win of the season. After two goalless draws on the road and a heartbreaking late defeat to Liverpool at home, Newcastle are looking to bounce back from a challenging summer both on and off the pitch. Meanwhile, Wolves’ early fears have been realized, as they currently sit at the bottom of the table.

The ongoing Alexander Isak saga has added to Newcastle’s woes, and their performances so far have been disappointing, with no victories from their opening three fixtures. The Magpies have become just the fifth team in Premier League history to begin a season with two consecutive 0-0 away draws, having done so at Aston Villa and Leeds United. Their only other result was the dramatic late loss to Liverpool. Remarkably, this is only the second time in the club’s history that Newcastle have started a season with two goalless away games—the last instance being in 1901—and they have already recorded more 0-0 draws this campaign than in the previous two seasons combined.

Wolves’ recent form offers little encouragement for a turnaround, as they remain the only Premier League team yet to register a point and are rooted to the bottom of the table. Manager Vitor Pereira will be eager to avoid an unwanted milestone, as Wolves could lose their opening four league matches for the first time in their 127-year history. Defensive frailties have been a major issue, with no team conceding more goals so far—Wolves have shipped eight in defeats to Manchester City, Bournemouth, and Everton.

Howe faces a selection dilemma in attack after bringing in both Woltemade and Wissa, with the pair in contention to make their debuts this weekend. Anthony Gordon remains suspended, but even in his absence last time out, Anthony Elanga—who recently arrived in a high-profile move from Nottingham Forest—was left on the bench.

Newcastle are optimistic that Joelinton will be fit to return from injury, while Jacob Ramsey, who was substituted at halftime against Leeds as a precaution, could also be available to bolster the midfield.

For Wolves, former Newcastle target Jorgen Strand Larsen is expected to return after watching their 3-2 loss to Everton from the stands. He now faces competition up front from new arrival Tolu Arokodare, while fellow recent signing Fer Lopez made a positive impact off the bench last time out and could be in line for a starting role.

Defensively, Hugo Bueno is still recovering from a knock and Ki-Jana Hoever is managing a minor knee issue, but both could be available for selection. New signing Ladislav Krejci, who joined from Girona, is also in contention for his debut.

Newcastle: Pope; Livramento, Schar, Burn, Hall; Bruno Guimaraes, Tonali, Joelinton; Murphy, Woltemade, Barnes

Wolves: Jose Sa; S Bueno, Agbadou, Krejci; R Gomes, J Gomes, Bellegarde, Moller Wolfe; Fer Lopez, Strand Larsen, Arias
