West Ham have been hailed by football fans after deciding to prevent any supporters with half-and-half scarves from attending their derby clash against Tottenham this weekend amid concerns that away supporters could end up in the home end.

The half-and-half style scarf has been sold by vendors outside stadiums on Premier League matchdays for decades, but they have often drawn criticism from some supporters. Fans have claimed they are often sold at inflated prices and used to target 'tourists', while others simply believe they have no place in the game full stop as they appear to show allegiance for both teams.

Reports began to circulate on Friday morning that West Ham would be putting a stop to them for Saturday's huge derby game against Thomas Frank's men amid security fears. BBC Sport outlined that West Ham would "not permit" any half-and-half scarves, or similar items featuring the colours or badges of both clubs in order to prevent away fans from potentially gaining access to the home sections of the London Stadium.

The move has been welcomed by supporters on social media, as many said it was about time that half-and-half scarves were eradicated from the game. One wrote in a post on Twitter : "Quite right. I never understood the half and half scarves. I'd never hold a scarf that had an opponent on it."

Another called the scarves "an absolute disgrace" while a third said: "Wonderful! They should be banned from all Premier League games nation wide." The news was met with delight by another fan, who joked: "Our sport is healing," as another wrote: "I hate to say it… but is the game coming back?!

However, one fan said he felt half-and-half scarves were valuable souvenirs to some fans, adding: "I think half and half scarfs are great mementos from games. I get one at every game I go to and collect them."

The game will take place at the early kick-off slot of 12.30pm on Saturday, with both sides desperate for a win. Hammers boss Graham Potter remains under pressure at the London Stadium despite securing a morale-boosting 3-0 win at Nottingham Forest last time out.

Tottenham, meanwhile, are hopeful of returning to winning ways under Thomas Frank after a disappointing 1-0 loss at home to Bournemouth ended their 100 percent start to the season.
