Viktor Gyokeres has had a decent start to his Arsenal career, even if goals have been hard to come by in recent weeks.
The Sweden international made the move to Emirates Stadium from Sporting CP in the summer, with the Gunners agreeing to pay an initial fee of £55million (€63.5million), as well as an additional £8.5million (€10million) in bonuses. The 27-year-old came to London with the reputation of being a clinical striker having scored 97 goals in 102 games for Sporting over two seasons.
Gyokeres has not scored since the 3-0 win over Nottingham Forest on September 13, however, but his performances have been decent on the whole. "I loved it," Mikel Arteta said when asked what he thought of Gyokeres' performance away at Newcastle. "I absolutely loved how he took it. He went on board and there wasn't a single moment where he showed frustration.
"I told him that he was going to get some decisions and some not and he was going to have two or three players around him, but I loved his reaction a lot. The way he handled the situation emotionally and also because he was involved in a lot of dangerous moments. It's a pity he didn't score a goal because in my opinion he fully deserved it."
Gyokeres so far has three goals in the Premier League, which is six off Erling Haaland who is leading the goalscoring charts. Antoine Semenyo is in second with six goals, while Jaidon Anthony and Igor Thiago are next with four goals each. Gyokeres' three goals mean he is level with nine other players including Hugo Ekitike, Richarlison, Nick Woltemade and Jarrod Bowen.
As you would expect, Haaland is the current bookies' favourite to win the Premier League Golden Boot come May, with the Manchester City man 2/7 to win the prize, as per odds provided by BOYLE Sports . Gyokeres and Semenyo are second favourites, however, and priced at 16/1 to score the most goals in the league.
Mohamed Salah (currently on two goals) is priced at 20/1, while Joao Pedro and Ekitike are priced at 25/1. Alexander Isak comes in at 28/1, Woltemade at 40/1 and Manchester United's Benjamin Sesko at 50/1.
Gyokeres certainly has a chance of pipping the likes of Haaland and Salah to the Golden Boot award, but it's clear the striker needs to start firing in a few goals sooner rather than later. "It's been different games," Gyokeres said last month on his start to life at Arsenal.
"Some games have been tougher - where I couldn't perform how I wanted. That's maybe depending on how the game looked. But I had games where I felt very good.
"So it's been up and down but overall, I've managed to score a few goals and we won most of the games. So it's been quite a good start, but it could be better."
Gyokeres is also 28/1 to be the Champions League top goalscorer, as per BOYLE Sports . Kylian Mbappe is favourite at 2/1 while England international Harry Kane is next in line at 9/2.
