Kylian Mbappe: Real Madrid dealt injury blow as star striker limps off in France victory

Los Blancos’ No9 could miss crucial games should he be ruled out

Real Madrid will be sweating over the fitness of star striker Kylian Mbappe after the Frenchman limped off on international duty.

Mbappe had got himself on the scoresheet in Les Bleus’ 3-0 win over Azerbaijan in World Cup qualifying, and he was replaced by Florian Thauvin late on.

The former Paris Saint-Germain forward felt his ankle at the Parc des Princes, and was withdrawn by Didier Deschamps in the 83rd minute.

Adrien Rabiot, who had been heavily booed by French supporters, scored the hosts’ second, before Thauvin completed the rout just a minute after replacing Mbappe.

Crystal Palace striker Jean-Philippe Mateta was handed his international debut off the bench as he came on for Liverpool’s Hugo Ekitike with 10 minutes to play.

Asked about his captain’s condition afterwards, Deschamps said of Mbappe: “He received another blow to the same ankle where he was hurt [before].

“The pain decreases when he rests. In a match, contacts are inevitably going to happen. We will assess it. He has discomfort that is not ideal for him.”

Should Mbappe’s injury rule him out, Real are scheduled to face Getafe after the international break, before they take on Juventus in the Champions League.

El Clasico against Barcelona follows, before games against Valencia and Liverpool in La Liga and Champions League respectively.
