Ruben Amorim urged to turn to Wayne Rooney to help arrest Man Utd slide

Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim has been urged to turn to Wayne Rooney to help him get the best out of Benjamin Sesko . £74m striker Sesko has yet to score in one start and two substitute outings for his new club, and was questioned by some for only taking the 10th penalty in Wednesday's Carabao Cup defeat to Grimsby Town .

While it's still very early in Sesko's United career, and there have been suggestions cramp was a factor in the penalty decision, all is not right at Old Trafford in a wider sense. Amorim cast doubt on his own future after the cup humiliation, with the Red Devils missing out on Europe last season and yet to win a match this term.

Now, former Premier League striker Troy Deeney has encouraged the former Sporting CP boss to call on club legend Rooney for some assistance. Rooney's son Kai is already on United's books, and Deeney believes there could be a benefit to bringing the former England frontman into the fold.

"No one is saying Sesko is no good and needs to learn the basics — but there are nuances to playing for such a big club," Deeney wrote for The Sun . "Wayne Rooney lives near Carrington. He is there a lot with his son in the academy, why not ask for his help?

"It comes down to whether Amorim has that sort of humility to go and ask Rooney. He could speak to Sesko about how he dealt with moving from Everton to United, his home life, whether he needs help booking restaurants with a bit of privacy. You could even get Rooney to take a few practices with the forwards, even if it is just for 20 minutes."

Deeney made reference to a similar situation during his early years at Watford . Sean Dyche, the Hornets' manager at the time, brought in former United and England star Teddy Sheringham to run the forwards through training drills, and the impact soon emerged.

Dyche left at the end of that 2011-12 season, but Watford went on to finish the following campaign as the top scorers in the Championship with 85 goals. Deeney scored 19 of those 85, and would score even more in each of the next two campaigns as the team eventually won promotion to the top flight.

United came back from 2-0 down to force penalties against Grimsby, but no member of Amorim's squad managed to find the net in either of the first two Premier League games. The Red Devils drew a blank at home to Arsenal , while Rodrigo Muniz's own goal helped them earn a point away at Fulham .

Next up is a home game against Burnley , with pressure mounting on Amorim, and the head coach has opened up on the frustrations he voiced after the midweek loss. "In that moment, I was really upset and really disappointed, because I felt like we had a good pre-season, we were playing better, we were being consistent in the way we played," he told reporters.

"We played badly [for] 30 minutes against Fulham, and then that kind of performance [at Grimsby], I was really disappointed with everything. But now, it’s a new game and I’m focused on the next game.”
