Moment ‘stressed’ Andre Onana shoves fan before bottle is thrown at him

MANCHESTER UNITED'S Andre Onana shoved a fan out of fear for his safety following Cameroon’s 1-0 defeat to Cape Verde, SunSport has been exclusively told.

The 29-year-old - who has endured a rough start to the season - was in goal for Cameroon as they suffered a damaging 1-0 loss to Cape Verde in their World Cup qualifier.

Onana’s role in the decisive moment was once again the talking point.

He initially stayed on his line longer than he should have when faced one-on-one with Cape Verde’s Dailon Livramento.

He then dived the wrong way as Livramento’s shot found the back of the net.

The result leaves Cape Verde on the cusp of qualifying for their first-ever World Cup while Cameroon slipped to second in the group with just two games remaining.

After the game, a video circulating on social media showed Onana shoving a fan away as he made his way off the pitch before another threw a bottle at him from behind.

However a source close to the player told Sunport that even though the error weighed heavily on his mind, his actions were driven by concerns for his safety.

The source said: “You know after the game most of the fans, especially the Cape Verdean fans all flood the field.

“They were all big fans of Andre but with the stress of the game he was just looking to rush into the dressing room because of the nature of how the pitch was flooded with fans.

“But afterwards it was nothing. A lot of the fans still waited for him to take pictures.

“It was the same when we got to the airport as plenty of fans were there waiting to take photos with him.”

Cameroon - who boast the likes of Carlos Baleba and Bryan Mbeumo - will now hope to win their remaining two matches to secure qualification for next year’s tournament.

Meanwhile, SunSport understands talks are advanced for Onana to complete a loan move to Turkish side Trabzonspor.

The goalkeeper was signed by Erik ten Hag two seasons ago and has remained United’s first-choice despite a string of errors.

His most recent mistake at United came when he misjudged a cross against Grimsby a move that ended with the ball in the back of United’s net.

He has been benched for United’s first three league games this season with Altay Bayındır preferred between the posts.

His situation has become almost untenable following United’s deadline-day signing of Senne Lammens from Royal Antwerp.
