Ruben Amorim handed Bryan Mbeumo headache after Cameroon’s major setback
A nightmare Bryan Mbeumo situation has arisen for Manchester United boss Ruben Amorim, following Cameroon’s defeat to Cape Verde on Tuesday.
Cameroon’s bid for automatic World Cup qualification suffered a huge setback after a shock defeat to Cape Verde.
Dailon Livramento scored the only goal of the contest, winning the ball in the middle of the park before embarking on a surging run and easily beating Andre Onana.
Going into the match, Cameroon trailed Cape Verde by just a point and were widely expected to take the victory. Instead, the defeat leaves Cape Verde just one victory away from sealing their place at the World Cup.
Cape Verde’s remaining qualifying games are against Eswatini and Libya.
The blow to Cameroon’s World Cup chances has created a headache for United and Amorim, particularly in relation to Mbeumo.
Cameroon’s hopes remain alive, but their road to the World Cup now looks anything but straightforward.
The Indomitable Lions must finish as one of the four best-ranked runners-up who advance to the second round. They’re currently in fifth place on goal difference.
The West African country must then amass sufficient points to reach the second round after facing Mauritius and Angola. If successful, Mbeumo and his teammates will progress to a four-team play-off featuring a semi-final and potentially a final later in November.
Even if Cameroon take victory in the final, their journey wouldn’t be over. They would still need to triumph in two further inter-confederation play-off matches in March to secure World Cup qualification.
For Mbeumo, this translates to two high-stakes international breaks, in which Cameroon must win by all means.
Cameroon’s fight for World Cup qualification will dominate the next three international breaks, and with Mbeumo their star man, he is likely to play every game – a scenario that would be far from ideal for Amorim and United.
