Jurgen Klopp's wife's reaction said a lot when the German was approached by Manchester United . The ex- Liverpool boss also gave a telling response when a signed United contract was put in front of him last year.

With Ruben Amorim's side stuck in relative turmoil , having lost three of their first seven Premier League games, a daunting trip to Anfield now beckons. Calls for Amorim to be replaced are already loud but could become deafening should the result be negative.

One name who certainly won't be in the running should he depart is former Liverpool manager Klopp. The German taking up a role at Old Trafford is inconceivable given the years of loyal, trophy-laden service he provided to Liverpool. However, at one point, it was a possibility.

Klopp's wife was the one who had the final say on a United approach when the head coach was with Borussia Dortmund and the 58-year-old himself gave his true feelings away when he had a contract placed in front of him last year.

During his time managing in Germany, Klopp was hot managerial property and a few top European sides came calling. One of those was United.

Speaking to Denmark's TV2 in 2019, Reds icon Phil Thompson shed light on Klopp's decision in 2013. He said: "I interviewed Klopp for Sky, and I asked if he and Liverpool were created for each other. He looked at me and asked, 'Why?'

"Then Klopp told me he could have taken over Manchester United, but his wife said it wasn't right. When Liverpool arrived, his wife said it was right. There is something strange there. It is as if he's created for Liverpool."

After remaining with Dortmund, Klopp made the move to Anfield in October 2015 and the rest is history. He transformed the side into Premier League and Champions League winners and received a legendary send-off when he stepped down in 2024.

But during the tail end of his swansong campaign, a strange incident baffled Klopp. Liverpool were knocked out of the FA Cup by United with a 4-3 defeat in April 2024 during his final season before stepping aside for Arne Slot .

The defeat was particularly painful, with Amad Diallo scoring the decisive goal in stoppage time to secure victory for Erik ten Hag's team. When Klopp entered the press room, visibly frustrated, an unusual piece of paperwork was present in front of him .

Klopp held up what appeared to be a United contract, already signed. He gestured to a member of staff present with clear confusion and handed the paper over baffled.

But this was actually a contract signed by YouTuber and popular streamer IShowSpeed, whose real name is Darren Watkins Jr. The internet personality, known for his wild antics in videos, had visited Old Trafford that year out of admiration for club legend Cristiano Ronaldo .

United had hosted the American by giving him a tour of the dressing room, a jersey and inviting him to sign a mock contract in the press room.

It remains unclear whether the contract was deliberately left to unsettle Klopp, especially since his time at Liverpool was coming to an end that summer. However, Klopp appeared merely confused by the situation.

He took up a role as Red Bull' s Global Head of Soccer soon after leaving Liverpool, and if he were to return to the dugout down the line, Old Trafford would very likely not be the destination of choice.
