Jurgen Klopp has made it clear what he expects from Liverpool fans when Trent Alexander-Arnold returns to Anfield. Many Red supporters were left upset that the 26-year-old allowed his contract to run down before joining Real Madrid .

He was booed by some during his final few appearances for the club with which he won two Premier League titles, the Champions League , FA Cup and League Cup, among other honours.

The England international has had a difficult start to life in Spain. After being pitched into a battle with Dani Carvajal for the right-back berth in Xabi Alonso’s side, Alexander-Arnold has suffered an injury which initially raised doubts over his availability for Real’s Champions League showdown at Anfield on November 4.

But after making good progress in his recovery, he is on course to be fit for that game. It will be intriguing to see what sort of reception he receives from the home fans.

Former Reds boss Klopp will hope it is a positive one after expressing his disappointment in the fans’ reaction to him at the end of last season, following confirmation that he would be leaving his boyhood club. The German said he was so dismayed, he resorted to turning off the TV.

Speaking at an LFC Foundation event in May, Klopp said: “I don’t want to tell you what you have to think. I can tell you what you think is wrong. I don’t tell you [that] you should not be angry, you should not be disappointed, I tell you don’t forget. This club doesn’t forget.

“I watched the game when he came on and I heard the booing. I switched the telly off. Honestly, I could not have been more disappointed at this moment.”

Klopp, who stepped down as boss a year earlier, said supporters should remember Alexander-Arnold’s invaluable contribution to the club after rising through the youth ranks.

He added: “He gave absolutely everything and wears the Liverpool badge in the skin. ’Why didn’t he sign a new contract?’ I hear this from fans, this money discussion: ‘He goes without a transfer fee.’ They [the owners] have to be angry.

“This boy, 18 years old, scored a free-kick in Hoffenheim, where if he doesn’t score that we don’t qualify for the Champions League [via a play-off].

“Against Barcelona [in the Champions League], he did the most cheeky thing in the world and set up the goal for 4-0, a result and a game which will not happen again. But now he plays next year for another club and we decide how we deal with that.”

Liverpool have five games before Real’s trip to Anfield, starting with Sunday’s home clash with Manchester United .

Sky has slashed the price of its Essential TV and Sky Sports bundle ahead of the 2025/26 season, saving members £192 and offering more than 1,400 live matches across the Premier League, EFL and more.
