EFL side 'consider shock U-turn' to bring back manager they sacked 87 days ago

SHEFFIELD UNITED are considering a sensational U-turn to bring back Chris Wilder just 87 days after sacking him, it is reported.

Wilder, 57, was replaced by former Southampton boss Ruben Selles in June after failing to return the club to the Premier League.

Tommy Watson's 95th-minute winner in May's play-off final sent Sunderland up and consigned the Blades to a second season in the Championship .

This was despite them recording a club-record 92 points - though two of these were docked for breaching EFL regulations.

But Selles is under immediate pressure at Brammall Lane after losing his first six games - with The Star in Sheffield reporting club chiefs have sounded out their former boss.

The Blades are rock-bottom of the Championship with no points and a -11 goal difference after Ipswich thrashed them 5-0 last night.

They were also knocked out of the Carabao Cup in the first round after a 2-1 defeat to Birmingham and haven't scored a goal in their last four games.

Remarkably if Wilder does return it would be his THIRD spell as manager at his boyhood club, where he also enjoyed two stints as a player.

The Yorkshireman was first appointed in 2016 with the Blades in League One before leading them to the top flight within three years.

He achieved a ninth-place finish in their first season back in the Premier League but left in 2021 with the club bottom.

After brief spells at Middlesbrough and Watford, Wilder returned to Sheffield United in December 2023 but could not prevent them being relegated from the top flight that season.
