The international break may have come at an inopportune moment for Graham Potter’s West Ham side, who were riding high after an impressive 3-0 away victory over Nottingham Forest in their most recent outing. The Hammers had lost their first three matches across all competitions, putting Potter under mounting pressure, so that emphatic win could have been the spark needed to turn their season around.
In contrast, Tottenham manager Thomas Frank likely appreciated the pause following a 1-0 home defeat to Bournemouth. Spurs had started the campaign strongly, winning their first two league matches without conceding a goal, highlighted by an excellent 2-0 victory away at Manchester City.
Despite the morale-boosting win at Forest, West Ham have endured a difficult start overall, losing three of their four matches in all competitions. Heavy defeats to Sunderland and Chelsea in the league, along with an EFL Cup exit at the hands of Wolves, have made for a challenging opening to the season. The Hammers have conceded three or more goals in three of those four matches, though they have only failed to find the net once.
Tottenham, meanwhile, have made a promising start under Thomas Frank, securing victories over Burnley and Manchester City before their unexpected loss to Bournemouth. Spurs netted three times in their season opener against Burnley and have yet to concede more than one goal in any of their first three league fixtures.
