Three-time FA Cup winners facing FIFTEEN-point deduction over unpaid player wages

SHEFFIELD WEDNESDAY could be whacked with a FIFTEEN-POINT deduction after failing to pay their players on time.

Underfire Owls owner Dejphon Chansiri has failed to cough up players’ salaries on schedule five out of the last seven months.

And the EFL will charge them for breaking their financial rules and it will be referred to an independent disciplinary commission.

Rules state they can be docked three points for each late payment — which would amount to 15.

But mitigating factors will be taken into consideration as well as precedence of how other clubs have been sanctioned in the past.

Reading in 2023 failed to pay players and were docked one point while Wigan were hit with an eight-point penalty in 2023-24.

It is too early to know for certain the kind of sanction Wednesday could be hit with — but SunSport understands it is likely to land somewhere in between.

However, Wednesday’s rap sheet is so long, the commission could decide to go for the nuclear option.

This is yet another blow to hit Wednesday’s fans and the rump of a squad that is still left at Hillsborough under boss Henrik Pedersen.

The Owls drew 2-2 at Birmingham on Tuesday night to lift up to third from bottom in the Championship after eight games.

Although wages were due to be paid on Monday September 29, the club always have until midnight of the final day of each month to make the payments.

Junior players and admin staff did receive their wages and it is understood some senior players — but several have not, which falls foul of EFL rules.

Wednesday already have FIVE transfer embargoes placed on the club.

In layman's terms, Wednesday are unable to register any new players until all their outstanding payments are resolved.

But, on top of that, they can no longer bring in any free agents unless they have fewer than 16 permitted players.

These are players who have made three or more league starts at their current level over the course of their career.

Wednesday already have 16 of those so new arrivals will be limited in the meantime.

Angry fans are staging another protest before this Saturday’s lunchtime home game against Coventry .
