Three reasons why Barcelona should reconsider plan to release Lewandowski in the summer

As the 2025/26 season progresses, talks of Robert Lewandowski’s continuity beyond the summer of 2026 remain one of those decisions that the hierarchy will closely study.

Judging by what we have learned so far, Barcelona do not plan to extend the forward’s stay.

The veteran Poland forward has been a consistent goal-scorer and remains one of the most reliable figures in a squad that is relatively young and still developing.

While Ferran Torres is showing promise as a future main striker and the club is planning for new signings, the temptation might be to make room for younger talent.

However, a closer look at the current squad, recent performances, and Lewandowski’s enduring quality suggests that releasing him in 2026 could be premature and potentially detrimental to the club’s immediate ambitions and long-term stability.

Even at 37, Lewandowski continues to deliver at an elite level.

Take the 2024–25 season, for example, where he scored 42 goals across all competitions, including 27 in La Liga, showcasing his remarkable consistency.

His scoring ability remains unmatched within the current Barcelona squad, offering a strong advantage in tight matches where experience and composure are key.

Beyond his goals, Lewandowski brings leadership on and off the pitch, mentoring younger players and instilling a winning mentality that is essential in a team with several emerging stars.

A squad which has an average age of 25.5 years, having a veteran who has been in the sport for more than two decades, is a blessing that Barcelona must capitalise on.

Ferran Torres had a promising 2024/25 season, scoring 19 goals, which was his career-best tally.

While impressive, this still pales in comparison to Lewandowski’s 42 goals in the same season.

Torres is still developing as a central striker and has yet to demonstrate the same consistency or ability to influence high-stakes matches.

His role in the team is growing, but he will benefit greatly from playing alongside an experienced forward who can guide positioning, movement, and finishing.

This season, despite being a starter, the Spaniard has scored five goals in all competitions and Lewandowski, despite being used as a second fiddle, has scored four. That’s what experience brings.

Relying solely on Ferran to lead Barcelona’s attack could put undue pressure on a young player still adjusting to the demands of playing as a centre-forward.

Lewandowski’s presence would allow him to continue his development without being rushed, ensuring long-term growth for both the player and the team.

Barcelona added promising talents in recent transfer windows, including Marcus Rashford and Roony Bardghji, who have shown potential but are still acclimating to the club’s style and dynamics.

Rashford, for instance, has contributed some goals and assists, but integrating fully into Barcelona’s attacking system takes time.

Without Lewandowski as a reference point and reliable central striker, the new signings may face added pressure, potentially slowing their adaptation and disrupting team cohesion.

For now, considering the tight finances, Barcelona cannot afford the Haalands or Alvarezs of world football. Which is why players like Etta Eyong are being monitored .

Having a proven scorer and experienced leader will help such young players adjust more quickly.

While Barcelona have exciting young talents, the immediate and long-term benefits of keeping Lewandowski in 2026 are clear.

His goal-scoring consistency, unmatched experience, and ability to mentor emerging stars make him indispensable for the club’s current objectives.

Releasing him next summer could create unnecessary gaps in the attack and disrupt the team’s balance.

For sure, his role would be reduced, but Barcelona can strike a gentleman’s agreement to utilise his services beyond the football pitch.
