The late Premier League transfers confirmed after Deadline Day

The Premier League loves a bit of drama, not just on the pitch but off it too, especially on transfer Deadline Day.

When clubs are racing against the clock to get a deal done, there are contrasting feelings of both excitement and dread; your team may be about to sign a new player at the last minute, but they might also have left it too late and miss out altogether.

Increasingly, the deadline is a mere suggestion, so long as you have provided a deal sheet in the final two hours of the transfer window. This allows a club to confirm that an agreement has been reached and give themselves more time (an extra two hours) to submit the remaining documentation.

The Premier League revealed that a record number of deal sheets were submitted this year as clubs left it late to do business. Some of these deals fell through, but a number of them went through and were announced the day after.

Here are some of the noteworthy late transfers (and one that is still to be confirmed).

After eight years at Manchester City , Ederson has moved onto pastures new. The goalkeeper has been an ever present during the most successful period in the club’s history, winning six Premier League titles and the UEFA Champions League .

After being linked with a move away all summer, the Brazil international joined Fenerbahce in a permanent deal after the window closed.

Few would have guessed that, after his heroics in the Champions League last season, Gianluigi Donnarumma would be driven out of PSG within a few months.

Ederson’s exit and Donnarumma’s rift with Paris manager Luis Enrique allowed City to sign the Italy international. The 26-year-old will now compete with James Trafford for the gloves.

In one of the more surprising moves of the transfer window, Matt O’Riley has joined Marseille on loan from Brighton & Hove Albion .

The midfielder only moved to the south coast from Celtic last summer, but he will now link up with former Seagulls boss Roberto De Zerbi.

“Matt has the opportunity to challenge himself at the highest level in France and in the Champions League,” Brighton head coach Fabian Hürzeler said.

“We have a lot of competition in the midfield positions, and while we see Matt’s long-term future here with us, this gives him the potential of more game time.

“We will monitor his progress throughout the season with Marseille, and we wish him well for the rest of the season.”

City completed not one, not two, but three post-deadline deals on Tuesday as they announced the departure of Manuel Akanji.

The central defender will spend the season on loan with Inter Milan, and there is an obligation to buy if certain conditions are met. The loan fee is reportedly £900k (€1m) and the obligation is £13 million (€15m).

Fulham finally got the finger out to do some deals on Deadline Day, breaking their transfer record to buy Kevin from Shakhtar Donetsk for £34.6m and signing Samuel Chukwueze on loan from AC Milan.

The Cottagers managed to get one more player in the day after, too, announcing on Tuesday they had signed Jonah Kusi-Asare on loan with an option to buy from Bayern Munich.

“I’m really excited to join Fulham. It’s a fantastic club with great supporters, and I can’t wait to get started, work with my teammates and give everything for the club,” he said.

Charlton Athletic are trying to sign Chelsea striker David Datro Fofana on loan. They have submitted the relevant paperwork to the EFL, but they reportedly feel that it may not have gone through in time.

The club required a deal sheet for extra time to do the deal for Fofana, who turned down a move to Celtic.
