Scott McTominay linked with sensational Premier League return despite stunning form

Scott McTominay could return to the Premier League next year, having reportedly grown weary of his personal situation in Italy. McTominay left Manchester United to join Napoli last year and has enjoyed his time on the pitch but may cut short his time there after two seasons.
The 28-year-old helped Napoli win Serie A last season and is a key player for Antonio Conte ’s side, with 17 goals and seven assists in 46 appearances. He is loved by the fans in Naples after being named player of the year in Serie A.
His £25.7million transfer has been hailed as a bargain and McTominay is now playing in a side which also features Kevin De Bruyne and United loanee Rasmus Hojlund. But after enjoying a stellar debut campaign, things have become a little more difficult in 2025/26, with Napoli’s fragilities shown by their 6-2 thrashing by PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League in mid-week.
McTominay scored both of Napoli’s goals in that game and netted again in their 3-1 win over Inter Milan on Saturday to send his side back top of Serie A. Yet The Sun reports that everything isn’t as positive away from the pitch in southern Italy.
The report states that McTominay has found the glare of the club’s passionate fanbase difficult to deal with. While he is happy living with his long-term girlfriend Cameron Reading, he reportedly is unhappy that he can’t go out and do normal things without being mobbed by fans in the one-club city.
McTominay has four goals and one assist in 10 matches this season, with three of those strikes coming this week. He would no doubt be an attractive proposition for a Premier League side, although he is under contract with Napoli until June 2028 and would therefore command a high fee.
Conte would unsurprisingly not want to lose one of his best players as they try to defend their title. McTominay’s goal in the win over Inter on Saturday underlined his importance as they went top of the table.

“I live the game with my players, for good and bad, and we played against, in my view, the best squad in Italy,” Conte said post-match.
“They dropped some points along the way, but their squad is on paper on a completely different level to all the others. They didn't get to the Champions League final twice in three years because of a fluke.”
Napoli have several injuries to contend with, making their victory even more impressive. “Perhaps someone has cursed us, but we keep going anyway. Inter came here today aiming to, on a sporting level, kill us, as they were in great shape,” Conte added.
“If you understand that moment of the campaign, you have to kill your opponent, but we had no intention of dying. Among all those problems, we put in a great performance.”
