Ruben Amorim makes Andre Onana feelings clear in cryptic response to Grimsby humiliation

Ruben Amorim refused to point the finger of blame at Andre Onana following another below par performance from the Manchester United goalkeeper in the chastening defeat at Grimsby Town .

The Red Devils found themselves 2-0 down at Blundell Park on Wednesday night against League Two opposition in the Carabao Cup second round. And while United rallied through goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire to seemingly salvage the game in normal time, they went on to lose on penalties in one of the biggest cup shocks in recent memory .

It was another night to forget for Onana, who started for the first time this season. He was beaten at his near post for Grimsby's opener before being caught in no man's land to effectively gift Tyrell Warren the Mariners' second goal.

The Cameroon international's position has United's No 1 has long been scrutinised after a string of poor displays and it remains to be seen if he will remain as the team's first-choice keeper moving forward. But Amorim refused to twist the knife after he was asked about Onana post-match.

“With all respect when you play against a fourth division team, it's not the goalkeeper, it's everything,” Amorim raged. “It's the environment. It's the way we face the competition. Everything. With that performance today my players spoke for me really loud.”

A crestfallen Amorim offered no excuses for the rest of his embarrassed players post-match as he admitted that the right team won after Grimsby came agonisingly close to knocking United out in normal time.

“I know that the best team won, the only team that was on the pitch,” Amorim said cryptically. “I think the team and the players spoke really loud today. So that's it. We lost; the best team won. I think it was really clear for everybody what happened today.

“It's not just the space (we gave them), but the way we started the game without any intensity - we were completely lost. And it's hard to explain. That's why I think they spoke really well. I think they gave the response on the pitch today. When you see something that, like today, it's hard to talk. I just want to say I'm really sorry for the fans.”
