Ruben Amorim doubles down on furious Man Utd reaction as he launches rant at players

Ruben Amorim admitted he had "nothing to say" after seeing Manchester United go out of the Carabao Cup at the hands of Grimsby in a shocking new low for his beleaguered team.

The League Two outfit had led 2-0 at half-time following a fast start but the Red Devils avoided embarrassment in normal time as Bryan Mbeumo and then Harry Maguire levelled the contest, forcing a penalty shootout. However, it was Mbeumo who would eventually miss the decisive penalty, seeing his second effort hit the bar after all 11 players took a spot kick.

Blundell Park went crazy when Mbeumo's miss confirmed one of the biggest cup shocks in recent history, leaving Amorim to dissect the lowest moment of his tenure thus far as his side were outplayed for long periods by a team three leagues below them. He cut a hugely frustrated figure post-match and was honest enough to concede he could not explain the performance.

The Portuguese coach claimed: “I would like to say very smart things and very important things. I have nothing to say. Nothing to say. That is the biggest problem also. To see the same mistakes and nothing to say in this moment. I’m really sorry for our fans. It’s too much sometimes.”

Previous to that the United boss had been hugely critical and made it clear that he felt his team had gone backwards following their loss to Arsenal on the opening weekend of the Premier League , where they earned plaudits for such a dominant display. He said: “I just want to say sorry to our fans, I have nothing to say anymore about the performance.

"When everything is so important in our club and you try to do everything. You have come from pre-season, even Arsenal you lose the game but you are there, you are improving and you see the performance, but then reach this kind of game, when everything is so important in our club.

"And when you start a game like this… I think my players are talking really loud about what they want, so I’m really sorry to our fans, I have nothing to say anymore.”

The last time Manchester United were beaten in the second round of the Carabao Cup was more than a decade ago when they were stunned by MK Dons. Louis van Gaal saw his team lose 4-0 early in his tenure and Amorim has suffered similar embarrassment.
