Keegan, a former Liverpool star and England great, was one of several ex-Three Lions players honoured with wall space at the national team’s hotel.

But for Rooney, a born Evertonian, a Manchester United legend and fierce rival of Liverpool, it was a step too far.

He said on the Wayne Rooney podcast: “When we first went in we’d always have the same room and they had pictures of England legends in every room.

“My room had Kevin Keegan , there’s no way I’m going to bed every night with a Liverpool legend’s picture on my wall."

Instead of brushing it off, Rooney took action and made his feelings very clear.

He revealed: “I made them take it down and they put a picture of myself."

Rooney would go on to become a legend of English football in his own right.

He made his England debut in 2003 at just 17, becoming the youngest ever player to represent the Three Lions at the time.

Rooney went on to earn 120 caps and score 53 goals for his country, holding the all-time scoring record until it was broken by Harry Kane .

At club level, the Scouser became Manchester United’s all-time top scorer with 253 goals in a glittering career at Old Trafford .

Keegan, meanwhile, was a superstar of the 1970s, winning three league titles with Liverpool and twice lifting the Ballon d’Or.

He also managed the national team between 1999 and 2000 and is still highly-rated by English football fans.
