Rio Ngumoha, 16, scores late winner to break ten-man Toon's hearts

IT simply wasn’t possible for this night to have been any crueller for Eddie Howe’s Newcastle.

With Alexander Isak on his sofa and Anthony Gordon in an early bath, the ten men of the Toon staged a ridiculous comeback from two-down - only for a 16-year-old to defeat them at the death.

Liverpool’s teen sensation Rio Ngumoha - a star of pre-season - arrived amid the bedlam and din of a frenzied St James Park and delivered the killer blow in the 111th minute.

It turns out Newcastle do have one willing Scandinavian forward - his name is William Osula and he seemed to have secured one of the most ridiculous comebacks in Premier League history when he fired a late equaliser.

Eddie Howe’s side were dead and buried, reduced to ten men and 2-0 down to champions Liverpool when the Toon Army roused them to grab an extraordinary comeback in the great Isak grudge match.

While this year’s Liverpool target sat in his lounge, it was last summer’s Liverpool target who seemed to have derailed Newcastle on a night of rage and passion on Tyneside.

Isak, the Swedish Arthur Scargill, might be Public Enemy No 1 around here for his one-man strike action as he attempts to force a move to Anfield.

Yet Scouser Gordon - the boyhood Reds fan who wanted a transfer to Merseyside last summer - hardly helped with a brainless red card for a reckless challenge on Virgil Van Dijk.

Still, after former Toon target Hugo Ekitike struck a second goal straight after the break, Bruno Guimaraes sparked the revival with a header before Danish sub Osula - loaned to Derby last season - netted the leveller and brought the house down.

There was another twist in the tail, though, as Ngumoha latched on to a Salah pass to score the winner in a breathless climax.

Newcastle were already trailing to a Ryan Gravenberch strike when Gordon produced his first-half brainstorm.

It felt as if sackloads of salt were being rubbed into Geordie wounds after the home supporters had created a wall of noise in a furious opening half-hour.

Yet Liverpool wilted amid the bedlam and Toon’s ten men staged the most remarkable fight back here since Newcastle roared back from 4-0 down to draw with Arsene Wenger’s Arsenal - only to blow it at the last.

Now Howe’s Saudi overlords must decide whether to grant Isak his move or whether the manager must attempt to reintegrate a man who claims he has suffered a breach of trust and has been left in solitary confinement at Newcastle’s training ground.

On the basis of this, both clubs could seriously do with him.

It was a surprise that Sky hadn’t set up some sort of sofa-cam in Isak’s living room to find out which side the striking striker would have been cheering for.

Newcastle had failed to beat ten-man Aston Villa on the opening weekend, missing the Swede all too obviously.

Before kick-off the Geordie nation had turned the amp up to 11. It was louder than the night Paris Saint-Germain were spanked 4-1 here in a Champions League match a couple of years ago.

And when the match started, every Liverpool error and every Newcastle tackle were cheered as if the Toon had won another trophy to add to the Carabao Cup Final they had lifted the last time they crossed swords with Slot’s side.

Slot, Howe and their coaches tried to hand out tactical tips from the touchline. It was like trying to play chess in the mosh pit at a Napalm Death gig.

Gravenberch was booked for a reducer on Guimaraes, Florian Wirtz had a bending shot pushed away by Nick Pope but largely it was chaos and din, a series of high-speed collisions played on a loop.

There was one lively Swede in a black-and-white shirt, Anthony Elanga making his home debut and darting down the right, cutting back for Joelineton, who couldn’t connect.

Ibrahima Konate, poor in Liverpool’s opening win over Bournemouth, was booked for dragging back Gordon.

Harvey Barnes swung in a cross and Gordon headed on to the roof of the net at the Leazes End to strangled cries from the distant Gallowgate.

When Liverpool tried to play keep-ball, the noise became so shrill that eardrums were perforated.

Then, out of nowhere, the champions scored.

Cody Gakpo laid off to Gravenberch who arrowed a low shot inside the post, a slight deflection off Fabian Schar making little difference, with Pope out of position and statuesque.

Suddenly, all you could hear were the Scousers in the altitude-sickness seats at the top of the Leazes.

Curtis Jones ought to have doubled the lead when he miskicked from a Mo Salah centre after a crossfield run from Gakpo.

Big Dan Burn kicked Salah up in the air to earn a booking and then came Gordon’s brainstorm.

Van Dijk was making a clearance when Gordon careered towards him and cleaned him out.

Ref Simon Hooper awarded a yellow card but VAR John Brooks ordered him to have another look and the whistler was left in the unenviable position of having to announce the overturn on his mic to a mutinous home crowd.

“Premier League, corrupt as f***!”, they hollered but their anger was misdirected.

The second goal arrived so soon after the restart that Slot hadn’t even reached his technical area, Ekitike drilling home his third in as many games, including the Community Shield.

How the Toon could have done with the Frenchman.

And if Isak does sign for Liverpool, could the Swede even displace him at centre-forward?

Still, Newcastle refused to go down without a scrap.

From a Tino Livramento cross, Guimaraes outjumped Milos Kerkez at the back stick to half the deficit.

Suddenly, Liverpool were under the cosh and looking rattled, with the natives bringing the noise.

A raft of substitutions lifted Newcastle further and it was Osula who nutmegged Alisson to level it before Ngumoha’s debut strike sealed an extraordinary match.
