Roberto Mancini has reportedly told pals he could be in line to take over the reins at Manchester United if Ruben Amorim is sacked. The head coach's position at Old Trafford is under constant speculation due to the team's ongoing struggles.
With a crucial match against an out-of-form Liverpool looming this Sunday, many supporters are hoping for a result, but facing Arne Slot's men will be a real test of where Amorim's United are at. Despite the mounting pressure, though, Sir Jim Ratcliffe has publicly backed the Portuguese head coach.
Speaking on The Times' The Business podcast , Sir Jim attempted to quell speculation about Amorim's future, explaining: "He has not had the best of seasons. Ruben needs to demonstrate he is a great coach over three years.
"That's where I would be. The press, sometimes I don't understand. They want overnight success.
"They think it's a light switch. You know, you flick a switch and it's all going to be roses tomorrow.
"You can't run a club like Manchester United on knee-jerk reactions to some journalist who goes off on one every week."
However, should Sir Jim change his stance, Mancini has reportedly told friends that he could be the next man in charge at the Red Devils, according to The Sun .

Mancini, 60, has been without a job since leaving his role in Saudi Arabia just over a year ago. Yet, he is most renowned for his tenure at Manchester City , where he led the team to their first ever Premier League title in 2012 thanks to Sergio Aguero's dramatic 93rd-minute goal.
Based in the south of France, Mancini continues to be a beloved figure at the Etihad Stadium. City supporters were overjoyed when they unexpectedly ran into their former head coach during a trip to Monaco for a Champions League match earlier this month.
However, Mancini isn't the only big name being bandied about in connection with the Red Devils.
Crystal Palace's Oliver Glasner is one name that has been thrown into the hat for the role.
Meanwhile, ex- England manager Gareth Southgate has also been linked with the job in the event of Amorim's departure, although that prospect has been played down.
