Manchester United legend Paul Scholes unleashed a passionate X-rated rant as he admitted it would be fair if Ruben Amorim was sacked. The ex-United star has not been impressed and has now gone back on his prediction that his old club would make the top six.

United have won just twice all season with defeats to Arsenal and Manchester City preceeding the loss to Brentford last weekend. Amorim's men head into Saturday's clash with Sunderland knowing full well that performances need to improve if they are to live up to Scholes' hopes at the start of the campaign.

Before a competitive ball was kicked, Scholes told The Overlap Fan Debate that he had high hopes for the Reds. "I think top six would be more than acceptable.

"As much as you don’t want to say that, I always think Manchester United should aim for the very best and aim for the highest," he said. "I am just not sure. I think there are too many good teams now.

"I think Liverpool , Chelsea and City are all on the up. Arsenal [as well], I did not even mention Aston Villa , Newcastle .

"I think there is a lot of competition now to get top six." But as they sit languishing in the bottom half of the table before the game against Sunderland, Scholes has now backtracked on his prediction.

"I’d take top 10 now," he told FourFourTwo . "It’s not been a great start.

"They can’t seem to put two wins together. Potentially, they could do better, but at this point, it’s looking unlikely."

Questions around Amorim's future will no doubt continue to mount if United's poor run of form continues. Scholes appears to be running out of patience and admitted that he would have no qualms if the Portuguese boss was given his marching orders.

"You talk about managers being sacked, and none of us like doing that," he said. "But if he’d have been sacked on Sunday, I think we’d have all been saying: ‘Yeah f****** hell it’s about time, there’s no surprise to it'.

"I think he did have an excuse last year. He couldn’t train - well, he could train, but every three days they had a game.

"He’s had everything now, they’ve spent £200m and he’s got three weeks in between games to do everything he wants to do and get his style across. There’s just no sign of it getting any better, is there?

"Look, you’d like him to do well but he’s got to win games of football and he’s not winning enough games of football to warrant doing the job at the minute."
