Ornstein: Chelsea “in talks” over major new addition that will shake up transfers

It was an interesting day at the City Ground where Chelsea overcame a horrible first half showing to beat Nottingham Forest 3-0.

But perhaps the most interesting news of the day has come this evening. David Ornstein – quickly followed by numerous other sources – is reporting that Chelsea are in in discussions to appoint former Liverpool director of scouting and recruitment Dave Fallows in a “sporting leadership role.”

David Ornstein’s Tweet about Dave Fallows.

Chelsea’s scouting and recruitment department – much like many of the behind the scenes roles at the club and the playing staff and coaching staff – has been a revolving door for long periods of the BlueCo ownership.

Paul Winstanley and Laurence Steward have been in place for a while now as sporting directors, working with Joe Shields and Sam Jewell. We’re not quite sure why a 5th is needed, but Fallows is highly rated.

His 12 year spell at Liverpool working alongside the revered Michael Edwards saw them return the club from a low point to the top of the game where they are now. He left the Reds a year ago, and Chelsea look almost certain to be his next stop.

Sam Wallace’s article on the impending appointment says Fallows will be “expected to have a range of duties including scouting and data, player development pathways and loans, and football operations. The latter is expected to include recruitment of coaches and staff as well as players.”

So many voices in the room seems excessive and potentially troublesome – could this mean someone is on the way out?

Josh Acheampong scored his first pro goal and then spoke to Chelsea TV about how it felt.

Acheampong and Reece James also spoke to TNT Sport at full time about their feelings having played a key part in the win.
