Vitor Pereira has been sacked by Wolves after a horrendous start to the Premier League season. They currently sit bottom of the league and eight points from safety already after just 10 matches with no wins, just two draws and 22 goals conceded.

To make matters worse, the side with the worst defence record in the league are tied for the worst with Nottingham Forest with both sides only finding the net on seven occasions. Their only wins have come in the Carabao Cup when they came out victorious at home to heavily-rotated teams West Ham and Everton before bowing out in the fourth round to Chelsea in a seven-goal thriller at Molineux.

Early indicators in the betting suggest the owners will be looking back to what they know starting with the man they sacked to bring in Pereira in the first place. Gary O'Neil is one of the names discussed at the moment despite being shown the door less than a year ago.

Other managerial candidates in the fold include Brendan Rodgers who is free having resigned at Celtic last month after falling out with the board over investing in the squad. Rodgers has been linked with the job at Molineux during Pereira's last couple of days at the club and has been deemed a good fit by some.

However, it would require some persuading from the Wolves hierarchy to bring him to Molineux and guide them out of the relegation zone.

The bookies have priced former Bournemouth manager O'Neil as the strong favourites to return to the Molineux dugout. The former West Ham player previously had a stint at the club from June 2023 to December 2024 where in his first season he took the club to an FA Cup quarter-final and finished 14th in the league.

William Hill's Lee Phelps, said: “It hasn’t taken long for Wolves to find themselves back in the managerial market, and Gary O’Neil is the clear favourite at even-money to make a return to his former club. His previous spell at Molineux makes him a natural contender, while Rob Edwards (3/1) and Rui Borges (4/1) are also attracting interest from punters.

“Brendan Rodgers and Michael Carrick are firmly in the mix at 8/1. Both are currently out of work, Rodgers having only recently left Celtic and Carrick still highly regarded after his spell at Middlesbrough.”
