Manuel Ugarte on Galatasaray’s January wishlist

Manchester United overpowered bogey team Brighton and Hove Albion 4-2 at Old Trafford on Saturday to climb to sixth place in the Premier League standings.

Despite referee Anthony Taylor’s best efforts , Matheus Cunha finally broke his duck for the Red Devils while Bryan Mbeumo grabbed a brace to sink the Seagulls.

The Red Devils had taken a commanding 3-0 lead within 60 minutes, and Ruben Amorim decided to hand minutes to fringe players like Kobbie Mainoo, Joshua Zirkzee, Ayden Heaven, and Manuel Ugarte .

The step almost backfired with the visitors scoring twice before the Cameroonian made matters sure right at the death.

The performance from a couple of the substitutes was a reminder as to why the head coach does not trust them to start games.

Among them, Manuel Ugarte has started three times in all competitions, and the 20-time English league champions have lost all of those games.

Brought in by Erik ten Hag as Casemiro’s eventual successor, the Uruguayan has proven to be a disappointing signing, and despite his former Sporting CP boss’ arrival, the 24-year-old’s fortunes have not changed.

The Brazilian midfielder is Amorim’s preferred choice to play as the defensive midfielder, and that is unlikely to change this campaign, unless there is an injury.

The former Paris Saint-Germain star will not be too pleased with this arrangement, especially in a World Cup year, and could look to move someplace where he is guaranteed to become a starter.

As revealed by Turkish journalist, Erol Evcen , the United No.25 is on Galatasaray’s list of targets ahead of the January window.

“Galatasaray is interested in Manchester United’s midfielder Manuel Ugarte ,” the reporter wrote on X (formerly Twitter ).

“Ugarte is on Galatasaray’s mid-season transfer list.”

Given the rumours of Mainoo leaving in the winter, and keeping in mind Casemiro’s ageing legs, it does not look likely that the Uruguay international will be allowed to leave mid-season.

But these rumours show how much his stock has fallen, and next summer, the defensive midfielder could well be on his way out of Old Trafford.
