Manchester United players have reportedly called on Ruben Amorim to give Tom Heaton a chance in goal amid Andre Onana and Altay Bayindir’s continued struggles.

United claimed their first win of the season in dramatic style on Saturday as Bruno Fernandes’ late penalty secured a 3-2 win over Burnley.

However, it was another unconvincing performance from the Red Devils, who were twice pegged back by Burnley at Old Trafford.

And yet again, it was goalkeeping woes that were at the heart of United’s problems, with Bayindir’s blunder allowing Jaidon Anthony to tap home Burnley’s second goal.

Bayindir appears to be Amorim’s first-choice keeper, particularly after Onana’s high-profile errors in midweek against Grimsby Town , but the 27-year-old has hardly made a compelling case to keep the position long-term.

And according to The Sun , United’s own players feel the same, with many convinced that third-choice keeper Heaton should be given a chance instead.

Heaton has only made three appearances since returning to Old Trafford in 2021, but a source told the newspaper: ‘Judging it on performances on the training pitch, some of the lads think Tom deserves a chance.

‘He’s very experienced, looks after himself and is a key member of the squad. The other two are both struggling at the moment, so why not give Tom a go?’

Amorim, however, looks set to keep faith with Bayindir and Onana, launching an impassioned defence of the under-fire duo after United’s win over Burnley.

‘Guys, they are humans,’ said Amorim. ‘Manchester United, everything is in use. Everybody talks about the goalkeeper. And you can see, I can change the goalkeeper in the situations that happen.

‘We are in that moment. I think it is hard to be a Manchester United goalkeeper in this moment. But if you look at the first goal, we can defend it better. We suffered a quite similar goal against Fulham, because we don’t do the full rotation of the team when the ball is on the other side.

‘All these small things have nothing to do with the goalkeeper. So, the players are struggling a little bit with all the things around the club. That is normal. So it’s not just the goalkeepers. I think everybody has to improve.’

Despite Amorim’s backing, however, reports suggest that United are seeking to bring in another goalkeeper before Monday’s deadline to provide competition for Onana and Bayindir.

The club have already been in talks with Royal Antwerp over the signing of Senne Lammens and are said to have returned with an improved offer to try and sign the highly-talented youngster.

And United are now also reportedly considering a last-ditch move for Aston Villa’s Emiliano Martinez who they have been heavily linked with throughout the summer.

Villa are likely to demand a figure of around £40million for the Argentine international, who is said to be keen on a move to Old Trafford.
