Man United still plotting to offload ‘unpopular’ star who stunned Amorim with bizarre request

Manchester United remain hopeful of selling their goalkeeper Andre Onana who is now considered surplus to requirements.

After two error-prone years at Old Trafford, Ruben Amorim was no longer keen to rely on the services of the Cameroonian. Despite the latter’s return from injury ahead of the opening day of the season, the manager has selected Altay Bayindir in all three Premier League fixtures.

While the Turkish shot-stopper didn’t cover himself in glory, his performances were still better than Onana who shipped in two avoidable goals in the humiliating defeat to Grimsby Town.

Amidst all the chaos, INEOS understood the urgent need to sign a new goalkeeper, and they ended up striking a deal with Royal Antwerp for Senne Lammens who is now expected to be handed the starting gloves.

Following the Belgian’s arrival, Amorim has found himself with four first-team goalkeepers, and very little space amidst the absence of mid-week football.

Therefore, Football Insider transfer correspondent Pete O’Rourke reveals that Man Utd are aiming to resolve the situation by selling Onana to the Saudi Pro League, where the transfer market will remain open until September 23.

If they succeed in this mission, Lammens should emerge as the undisputed first choice, with Bayindir as his understudy, and Tom Heaton retaining his role as a third-choice goalkeeper.

In addition to his weak displays between the posts, Man United are far from happy with the Cameroonian’s demeanour.

As reported by The Athletic’s Laurie Whithwell, Onana demanded a salary increase to remunerate him for the 25% cut after missing out on Champions League football. This untimely request was hardly appreciated by Amorim.

Moreover, Onana was described as an ‘unpopular’ player in the dressing room by retired Italian goalkeeper Alberto Fontana, who argued that his teammates should be irritated by his flamboyant, attention-seeking style of play.

Therefore, it remains to be seen if the former Ajax and Inter Milan will heed to the writing on the wall and put an end to his miserable time at Old Trafford.
