He said: “Liam Delap will be out for 10-12 weeks, unfortunately it’s a long way to go.”

The 22-year-old picked up the injury during Chelsea 's 2-0 win over Fulham in late August.

He was substituted for Tyrique George just 14 minutes into the match after receiving treatment for a leg injury on the pitch.

The blow had significant ramifications for Chelsea's business plans for deadline day just two days later.

Nicolas Jackson 's agreed loan move to German giants Bayern Munich was put in jeopardy as the Blues attempted to cancel the deal and keep hold of the Senegalese international .

Jackson pushed for the deal, igniting something of a standoff between the player and the club .

Chelsea instead turned to young talent Marc Guiu , recalling him from his very short-lived loan with newly-promoted Sunderland to fill the gap left by Delap's injury.

The former Barcelona star has found minutes hard to come by since making the move to England , but he could now be handed his shot as Maresca looks to maintain his squad depth.

Delap only joined Chelsea in June, arriving from relegated Ipswich Town for a fee of around £30million .

Fellow new arrival Joao Pedro will now have to take the mantle of the West London outfit's main striker .

The Brazilian has enjoyed an electric start to life at Stamford Bridge since arriving from Brighton for a £60million fee in July.

He has notched two goals and two assists in his three Premier League appearances so far this season.

The 23-year-old has primarily been deployed behind Delap until now, and questions remain as to how the Englishman's absence will affect his stellar early-season output.
