James Overy has caught Amorim’s eye following U20 World Cup exploits

When he was first appointed as the new Manchester United head coach, Ruben Amorim made it a point to look to the club’s famed academy to fill holes in the squad.

As a result, the likes of Chido Obi , Harry Amass, and Tyler Fredricson all earned their debuts under the Portuguese tactician last season.

But so far this term, no debuts have been handed out and Amorim has refrained from throwing academy wonderkids into the mix.

But that has not meant he is not keeping a close watch on developments at Carrington, with Shea Lacey tipped to make his breakthrough this campaign.

Another youngster who has caught the eye is James Overy , who recently shone for Australia in the U20 World Cup. In fact, the United academy wonderkid was the youngest member of the Australian squad.

Now, as per The Daily Mail , the Australian has caught Amorim’s eye and has been called up to first team training on three separate occasions this past week.

“A lot was made in the past week of 15-year-old JJ Gabriel being drafted into a first-team training session, but it’s worth shining a light on another young player who is going a bit more under the radar, in 17-year-old James Overy .

“The Australian, who has recently returned to Carrington from the Under-20 World Cup, was called up on three occasions by Amorim’s staff to join in with senior training last week.

“It’s a sign of just how much of an impression has been made on the coaches by Overy, who was the youngest squad member that went with Australia to the World Cup.”

James Overy has managed six appearances in total for United’s academy sides, four for the U18s and two for the U21s. However, he is yet to start for Travis Binnion’s team this season.

Now back at Carrington, the right-back will be looking to kick on and earn regular minutes while also trying to impress the first team coaches.

“He’s got one hell of a future ahead of him,” a source told the publication. Fans will be very excited to hear all of this.
