Liverpool will be without Hugo Ekitike for their Premier League clash against Crystal Palace this weekend.

The summer signing was introduced at half-time in the Reds' 2-1 win over Southampton in the Carabao Cup third round on Tuesday evening. The Frenchman scored the winner with five minutes of normal time remaining and celebrated by taking his shirt off.

As the 23-year-old had been booked earlier in the half for punching the ball after a decision went against him, he was shown a second yellow card and sent off. That means Ekitike will now be suspended for Liverpool's Premier League clash against Crystal Palace on Saturday.

Alexander Isak had earlier scored his first goal for Liverpool after being set up by Federico Chiesa. The Italian latched on to a poor pass by Alex McCarthy and squared it to the Swede, who made no mistake from close range.

Shea Charles equalised for the away side with 76 minutes on the clock as Wataru Endo made a mess of clearing a saints corner. Ekitike spared the Japan international's blushes, however, as he tapped home into an empty net after more good work by Chiesa.

Isak may now be set for a second successive start after Ekitike's red card. Red cards in the Premier League, FA Cup and Carabao Cup games count for all domestic competitions and do carry across, which means the former Frankfurt man will be suspended for one match and miss the game against Crystal Palace at Selhurst Park on Saturday. The striker will be available for Galatasaray in the Champions League three days later, however and then again in the Premier League against Chelsea on October 4.
