How 25-year-old Real Madrid star has quietly been the most influential figure under Alonso

Real Madrid’s 2025/26 season has been marked by several standout performers – from Thibaut Courtois’s world-class form in goal to Arda Guler’s breakout performances and Kylian Mbappe’s unstoppable goal streak.

Yet, one player who has quietly become the heartbeat of Xabi Alonso’s system is Aurelien Tchouameni.

While the headlines often belong to the attackers, the French midfielder’s growing influence has been one of the key pillars behind Madrid’s evolution under their new manager.

Since Alonso’s arrival, Tchouameni has reached new heights of maturity and consistency and he has become indispensable.

The El Clasico win perfectly encapsulated his transformation. Calm under pressure and tactically flawless, Tchouameni ensured Madrid stayed in control when it mattered most.

In terms of statistics, he has featured in each of the 13 matches Real Madrid have played this season – 12 as a starter – while accumulating 1,089 minutes out of a possible 1,170.

That means he has been on the pitch for an astonishing 93% of Madrid’s season so far.

Against Barça, his partnership with Eduardo Camavinga was fundamental. The French duo seamlessly balanced defensive duties with build-up play.

Tchouameni completed the most passes (28) with an 89% accuracy , and was the second-most involved player in terms of touches (45) , behind only Jude Bellingham (53).

Offensively, he contributed with three key passes, with only Mbappe managing more (four), along with one off-target shot and two blocked attempts.

Defensively, he was equally impressive. He recorded six defensive actions – the third-highest in the team – and led Madrid in blocked shots (two) .

Alonso has built a tactical structure that perfectly suits Tchouameni’s qualities. He is now Madrid’s anchor, the man who keeps the team compact when out of possession and gives balance when building from the back.

Once criticised for inconsistency in his first seasons, the 25-year-old has now developed into a leader who exudes calm and confidence.
