“Here we go”: Ex-Man United star Anthony Martial set to join Monterrey

Former Manchester United striker Anthony Martial is poised to complete a move to Mexican club Monterrey, the reliable Fabrizio Romano has confirmed.

Martial joined United in 2015 from AS Monaco, then as one of the most promising youngsters in world football. He scored a fantastic debut goal against Liverpool, further heightening expectations.

However, a combination of inconsistent form and injuries prevented Martial from truly reaching his potential at Old Trafford.

He made 317 appearances for United, scoring 90 goals in that period. The Red Devils released him at the end of the 2023/24 season upon the expiry of his contract.

After parting ways with United, Martial signed for AEK Athens. Just like at United, he enjoyed a promising start but he couldn’t sustain it.

The Frenchman chalked up just 24 appearances for the Greek outfit across all competitions. AEK Athens sought to move him on this summer in a bid to clear his significant salary from the books, opting not to register him for the UEFA Conference League.

Martial was also left out of AEK Athens’ last six matchday squads.

Now, Romano has confirmed that the ex-United man is on the verge of joining Monterrey.

Romano wrote on X, “Anthony Martial to Monterrey, here we go! Deal in place with Rayados as he will play with Sergio Ramos.”

“Green light arrived from AEK Athens to let Martial travel for medical and contract signing in Mexico.”

According to Mexican news outlet TUDN , cash-loaded Monterrey will fork out €3.8m to snap up the 29-year-old.

If he passes his medical, Martial will become the latest big name to join Monterrey after the likes of Sergio Ramos and Luis Campos.
