Pym, 30, made some crucial interventions during the match to stop United from managing a full turnaround to force a penalty shootout.
He even stepped up in the spot kicks as he denied Matheus Cunha to stop Grimsby being knocked out before sudden death.
Though that would be his only save as Bryan Mbeumo would miss his second penalty to hand the win to the Mariners.
But Pym's stunning moment came during his post-match interview as he revealed he could not full enjoy the win due to his split loyalties.
He told Sky Sports: "It’s not sunk in yet.
"I’m a Man Utd fan, so I’m half-fuming a little bit.
"Night’s like this is what you play football for. Just brilliant.
"I should have done a little bit better (in the shootout), shouldn’t I?
"I made one save to keep us in it and the boys have done the rest. It’s brilliant."
Pym had only made the move to Blundell Park last month as he signed a two-year deal.
He was a free agent after leaving Mansfield Town earlier this summer.
But he was being cheered on by Stags fans 150 miles away who watched on at the Bramley Moore Hotel after their defeat to Everton .
But for his team-mate and goalscorer Tyrell Warren the victory was even sweeter.
He had spent his youth at the academy of United and played alongside Marcus Rashford and Scott McTominay .
