And during a 4-0 win over Lorient on Friday night, the former Manchester United wonderkid netted his first goal for his new club.

With Marseille already 2-0 ahead thanks to a Mason Greenwood penalty and Benjamin Pavard goal, Gomes was patrolling the edge of the penalty area during a 33rd minute corner.

An outswinging ball went through the crowd of players in the box before finding its way to the 5ft 5in midfielder.

And in a piece of brilliant technical skill, Gomes touched the bouncing ball up before volleying it into the top left corner of the goal when it came back down.

The stunning strike left spectators at the Stade Vélodrome with their hands on their heads as Gomes wheeled off in celebration - with Nayef Aguerd scoring in injury time to round out a 4-0 win.

Gomes - a winner of the Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year award at Man Utd - has forged out a career as a midfield conductor after a repositioning from a winger by ex-Lille boss Paolo Fonseca.

His strong form in the new position earned four England caps under Lee Carsley when the Three Lions Under-21 boss was the caretaker manager of the senior team.

Gomes made a strong claim to a spot in future squads with his excellent range of passing and tempo setting giving England a real edge over opponents - with the midfielder also getting an assist in a 3-1 win over Finland .

However, he has not had a look in under current boss Tuchel, who has reverted back to veterans such as Jordan Henderson .

Following some controversial omissions from the squad in the most recent international break, the former Chelsea manager said he would continue to make "brave decisions" over who plays under him.

Nottingham Forest star Elliot Anderson and Djed Spence were two stars who benefited from Tuchel testing the waters with first-time call ups to the senior Three Lions squad.

Tuchel has also not shied away from picking stars not playing in the Premier League, which is traditionally favoured by England bosses, with the inclusions of the likes of Marcus Rashford , who is on loan at Barcelona , while Bayern Munich 's Harry Kane is a shoe-in as the captain.

After a 2-0 win and 5-0 win over Andorra and Serbia respectively, England will be tested in a friendly against Wales and a World Cup qualifier against Latvia in October.

If Gomes can continue his good vein of form, he may give Tuchel some food for thought over his next squad, and ultimately the 2026 World Cup.
