FIFA introduces green card at U-20 World Cup: What is it and how does it work?

T he U-20 World Cup is about to begin in Chile this Saturday, September 27, where the Mexican national team will participate with young players such as Gilberto Mora and Elias Montiel.

But beyond the search for a title by the 24 participating teams, FIFA will innovate with its green card to promote fairer markings on the field.

What is the FIFA green card?

Specifically, this new card is not for the use of referees, but for team coaches to 'challenge', in the style of the NFL , any decision they consider unfair on the field.

The U20 World Cup coaches will be able to use the green card on a couple of occasions in situations similar to those that deserve the participation of VAR : in the sanction or not of penalties, red cards, in goals or when the referee does not score them and when the referee takes a card to the wrong player.

This card is part of the Video Review System (FVS) , which had already been implemented last year at the Blue Star Youth Championship in Zurich and at the U-20 Women's World Cup in Colombia.
