Christian Eriksen tipped for Bundesliga move despite English suitors circling

After leaving Manchester United as a free agent at the end of June, many were curious where Christian Eriksen would end up.

Eriksen was heavily linked with a switch to Wrexham, where his experience could have bolstered “The Red Dragons and The Robins” in their spirited push towards the top tier of English football. However, that move failed to materialise.

Fortunately, Wrexham are not the only side keen on securing his services. According to a report relayed by The Peoples Person, the former United number 14 has attracted significant interest from both Premier League and Championship clubs .

As a free agent, Eriksen remains eligible to sign at any time. But while clubs continue to hesitate over snapping him up, a formidable rival may be preparing to enter the race.

Following the dismissal of former United manager Erik ten Hag last week , Bayer Leverkusen have appointed Kasper Hjulmand as his successor.

Hjulmand served as Denmark’s head coach from 2020 until 2024, stepping down after Denmark’s 2–0 defeat to Germany in the last 16 of Euro 2024.

The Danish tactician knows Eriksen well and stood by him even when it seemed the playmaker might never return to the pitch, following his collapse during a Euro 2020 match against Finland.

When Eriksen overcame his heart issues and resumed playing in 2022, Hjulmand continued to place his trust in him, regularly calling him up for national duty.

That relationship could now prove pivotal. As Manchester Evening News reports:

“Having worked closely with each other in the past on the international stage, Hjulmand could potentially turn to Eriksen as he looks to put his stamp on his new side.

“Leverkusen may also be on the lookout for additional quality in attacking midfield following the £116million summer sale of Florian Wirtz to Liverpool.”

A move to Bayer Leverkusen would offer Eriksen a return to top-flight football, with Champions League action on offer. However, MEN also highlight a concern:

“With options in attacking midfield already in place, should he join Leverkusen, Eriksen may find regular starts hard to come by. To be guaranteed regular game-time, the midfielder may have to drop down a level, and it’s a decision that will have to be made by Eriksen.”

Whether Eriksen will opt to make the switch to Bay Arena or stay in England, where he is commanding some interest, remains to be seen.

Either way, securing a move soon is crucial if Eriksen hopes to return to receiving those national team call-ups ahead of the World Cup.

He has been training with Swedish giants Malmö, but he still missed out on Denmark’s squad for the September World Cup qualifiers. One hopes that the October international break will tell a different story.
