Christian Eriksen seals free transfer to Wolfsburg – Fabrizio Romano

Former Manchester United midfielder Christian Eriksen has agreed to join German side VfL Wolfsburg on a free transfer, Fabrizio Romano confirms.

Eriksen, 33, left the Red Devils at the end of last season after the club decided not to renew his contract.

The Denmark international joined United on a free transfer from Brentford on a three-year deal in 2022, after an impressive short-term stint with the Bees.

Eriksen quickly formed a potent pairing with fellow new recruit Casemiro – signed from Real Madrid in a transfer worth an initial £60 million – at the heart of Erik ten Hag’s midfield.

Together, the experienced duo propelled United to a comfortable third place finish in the Premier League and triumph in the Carabao Cup, though Eriksen was injured for the final against Newcastle at Wembley.

The Dane finished the season with two goals and 10 assists across 44 appearances in all competitions.

As a free transfer, that season alone would have been sufficient to call Eriksen’s signing a success, given the long line of expensive flops at the Theatre of Dreams in recent years.

Eriksen’s success was not replicated across the following two campaigns with United’s performances in general suffering, first under Ten Hag and then his replacement, Ruben Amorim.

Both coaches attempted to implement high-octane football with an emphasis on pressing, pace and physicality; areas Eriksen has never called strengths, even at his peak.

Throughout this time, however, he remained a committed squad member with an excellent attitude and a likeable personality.

Eriksen’s departure in May – capped of with a goal in his final appearance for United in the 2-0 win against Aston Villa – was warmly received by the Old Trafford faithful.

Across the summer, Eriksen has been training with Swedish side Malmö in a bid to stay fit while he searched for a new club.

He was linked with a move to Championship hotshot Wrexham, as well as clubs in Turkey and Holland, where the 33-year-old maestro had previously played for Ajax.

But is the Bundesliga where Eriksen will call home this season, a league he has not played in before, after a deal was struck with Wolfsburg.

Tweet: “Christian Eriksen to Wolfsburg, here we go! Deal in place and medical in Germany for former Man United player. Eriksen has accepted the proposal as deal can be considered done, as @F_Abolhosseini reported. New chapter for the Danish star.”

Italian transfer expert Romano has given his trademark “here we go!” to the move with a medical set to take place for the former Red Devil.

Wolfsburg are currently sixth in the Bundesliga after four games, just two points off leaders Bayern Munich. Their next match is on Saturday against Koln, though this is likely to come too soon for Eriksen’s debut for Die Wölfe.
