Brentford 3-2 Liverpool: Bees clinch famous victory as Arne Slot's side beaten again
The hosts withstood a remarkable barrage deep in injury time to clinch a crucial win
Liverpool ’s nightmare run seems set to continue after they were beaten 3-2 by Brentford at the Gtech Community Stadium.
It is a fourth consecutive Premier League defeat for the Reds , whose midweek dismantling of Eintracht Frankfurt now seems to have been a mere false dawn.
Despite enjoying the lion’s share of possession, Liverpool remained toothless in attack. They could find no response for Dango Ouattara’s opener, which he fired home emphatically from a Michael Kayode long throw, which caused the visitors problems throughout the evening.
Moments after Liverpool launched credible appeals for a penalty after Cody Gakpo went down in the box, Kevin Schade made it two. Latching onto Mikkel Damsgaard’s peach of a through-ball, he poked deftly beyond Giorgi Mamardashvili to put Brentford two clear moments before half-time.
In the fifth of three added minutes, though, Milos Kerkez pulled one back. The door was open for Liverpool to flip the match’s momentum after the break, but they failed to capitalise on what could have been a pivotal moment. They were slightly improved on return to the pitch but remained frustrated by Brentford’s stalwart defending, and they were punished again.
Igor Thiago restored Brentford’s two-goal advantage from the spot on the hour mark to all but confirm the win, and Mohamed Salah’s late strike was a mere consolation.
Liverpool responded with colossal attacking pressure through the late stages of the match and seven minutes of added time, but Brentford stood firm to secure a famous victory.
The result leaves Slot with more awkward questions to answer ahead of a midweek Carabao Cup meeting with Crystal Palace, who set them on their losing run before the October international break.
