Manchester United coaches reportedly believe Benjamin Sesko is a major upgrade on Rasmus Hojlund . Sesko, 22, endured a slow start to life at Old Trafford after his £74million move from RB Leipzig.

The Slovenian had to settle for cameos from the bench in his first three Premier League matches and struggled to make an impact. However, he scored in United's 3-1 loss to Brentford and found the net in the 2-0 home victory over Sunderland just before the international break.

While Sesko was finding it difficult to find his feet, Hojlund was making an immediate impact on loan at Napoli , scoring four goals in his first six matches, including a brace in the Serie A winners' 2-1 home victory over Sporting Lisbon . Despite the Dane performing admirably in Italy, many of Amorim's backroom team are convinced Sesko is a much better player.

According to the Sun , United staff have been 'stressing' how much of an 'upgrade' the ex-Leipzig man is compared to Hojlund. While the Dane is further ahead in the goal standings, Ruben Amorim and coaches felt his work off the ball was a 'major concern'. However, they are said to be happy with Sesko's performance in this regard.

It's also claimed that Sesko's awareness and distribution have drawn praise from the United staff. In his final season in the Bundesliga, Sesko helped himself to 13 goals and five assists, while also scoring four goals in eight Champions League appearances.

Meanwhile, Hojlund contributed 10 goals and four assists, with nine of his goal contributions coming in their Europa League campaign. The ex-Atalanta forward was initially hoping to fight for his place at United and believed he could convince Amorim to start him.

When it was clear the club did not want to give him any more opportunities, he managed to secure a move to Naples, where he is working under Antonio Conte . In the summer, United icon Paul Scholes said the club should have kept Hojlund in their squad.

The former midfielder said: "I'd keep Hojlund. I know he's not been great but he's a 22-year-old kid who has been asked to play centre-forward for Manchester United on his own for the last two years.

"He's had to play every week. He's the only one there. He's a 22-year-old kid. With the way they play, Man United should have at least three top centre-forwards, and I'd bring him into that.

"He's struggled like mad of late, especially, but he's not got the chance to sit down and watch. If a striker is not doing well, no confidence, the manager sits you down and says, 'Have a look, get a bit of hunger back, a bit of feeling back for the game.' We all know he has got centre-forward qualities, we've seen it."

Despite the United coaches' thoughts on Sesko, Amorim still opted not to start him against Liverpool . Instead, the Portuguese boss deployed summer signings Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha in a front three, with Mason Mount being the third forward.

It worked perfectly as Mbeumo was able to get in behind the Liverpool backline and score, while Cunha also linked play brilliantly. Sesko came on from the bench and was played through one-on-one, only for a spectacular last-ditch tackle from Ibrahima Konate to stop him from taking a shot.

He could get his chance to add to his tally of two goals this season when United take on Brighton on Saturday night.
