Bayern Munich in talks with Dayot Upamecano over new contract
Bayern Munich are currently engaged in talks with Dayot Upamecano over a new contract, according to Sky Germany .
The Frenchman, who joined Bayern in 2021 from RB Leipzig, has become a key player under Vincent Kompany.
After a rocky start to life in Munich, Upamecano has regained a starting role and is expected to partner Jonathan Tah in the heart of the Bavarians’ defence.
Upamecano’s current deal runs until the summer of 2026, and Bayern are aiming to tie him down until 2030, although an agreement is not thought to be close at this stage.
However, recent statements from Upamecano indicate optimism about extending his stay at the Allianz Arena.
Speaking after Bayern’s 4-0 win over Tottenham in preseason, he confirmed that talks involving the club’s sporting directors and his agent are ongoing.
Bayern have already secured contract extensions for several core players recently, including Manuel Neuer, Joshua Kimmich and Jamal Musiala.
Nevertheless, complications have arisen in the negotiations with Upamecano, reportedly due to salary expectations and external interest.
Real Madrid have been linked with a move for Upamecano , potentially eyeing a free transfer once his current deal expires.
The Bayern hierarchy will be keen to avoid a repeat of the David Alaba scenario in 2021 when the Austrian left Bayern as a free agent for Los Blancos.
After a thrilling 6-0 victory over Leipzig to kick off their title defence, Bayern are in DFB Pokal action later today when they visit the Brita Arena to face off against lower league side Wehen.
