Arsenal have received a major boost in their hopes of winning the Premier League this season following the news that Crystal Palace captain Marc Guehi is set to remain at Selhurst Park.

The England defender's move to Liverpool has collapsed at the final hour on deadline day. Guehi, who helped the Eagles win the FA Cup last season, had all but agreed to join Liverpool for a fee of £35m on deadline day.

But according to The Athletic , the 25-year-old will no longer be joining the current Premier League champions. Palace boss Oliver Glasner had been vocal in his wishes to keep hold of Guehi, with a potential replacement sounded out in Jaydee Canvot.

But despite Guehi agreeing on personal terms and completing part of a medical in London on Monday, the deal has now gone cold. It is thought that a five-year contract was in place for the former Chelsea man to join Arne Slot's side.

A deal sheet was submitted to grant Liverpool additional time to complete the move, but Guehi is now set to stay at Selhurst Park, where his contract will expire at the end of the season.

Chelsea would also have received a sell-on fee following the move, further increasing their cash flow after a busy summer of activity at Stamford Bridge.

Coach Glasner is set to lead Palace through their UEFA Conference League campaign this season, and has been unequivocal in the fact that they must keep hold of Guehi in their hopes to be successful.

“He’s so professional and it was clear he would play today,” Glasner said in his post-match press conference after the Eagles beat Aston Villa on Sunday.

“I can say it with clarity, and I said it to the chairman that it’s nothing to do with Oliver Glasner but we need to keep Marc to play a successful season.

“We had a meeting in March where we talked about the situation so again we know how the situation is and we have an agreement that we could sell Marc if we have the right replacement in. We wanted to have this replacement at the beginning of the pre-season to be independent from this situation.

“That was on July 9 (the season started), it’s August 31 and there is no replacement in the building so it’s clear one part of the agreement is not fulfilled that means we can’t sell Marc.

“It’s not a wish or gift for Oliver Glasner, it’s necessary for playing a successful season. We had a great start and I think our fans deserve to have the best players available. I know if we don’t sell Marc, he will accept it. He loves the club and team, he feels the appreciation and we feel the same from his side. That’s why I have to say we need to keep him.”
