‘Amorim is looking at…’: INEOS prepare mid-season transfer swoop for position they strengthened in the summer

Despite adding Senne Lammens to Ruben Amorim’s ranks on deadline day last month, Manchester United could be in the market for a new goalkeeper in January.

Lammens arrived at Old Trafford on September 1 in an £18 million switch from Royal Antwerp, putting pen to paper on a five-year deal.

The following week, Andre Onana conceded he would no longer be playing a prominent role in Amorim’s plans – especially given the club is only playing one game a week this season – and jetted off to Turkey to join Trabzonspor on loan.

Even though Lammens had trained with the squad, Amorim opted against utilising him for the first four weeks of his tenure.

The 23-year-old was left out of the starting XI in place of Altay Bayindir for the Manchester derby, the win over Chelsea and subsequent defeat to Brentford.

He was then granted his debut over the weekend as United defeated newly-promoted Sunderland 2-0 in M16, with Lammens claiming the Player of the Match award after securing the side’s first clean sheet of 2025/2026 at the first time of asking.

Fans are now pondering whether his inclusion on Saturday means he is viewed as Amorim’s No.1. It’ll be telling to see whether Lammens retains his place when United travel to Anfield next Sunday, or if the boss calls upon a more senior option in the form of Bayindir .

Should the goalkeeping situation continue with such uncertainty heading into the winter, it’s thought a new shot-stopper may be brought in.

“Lammens is probably a long-term signing, still young and obviously a lot to prove still if he is to be a Man United number one in the future. Bayindir is number one right now for Amorim, and then Lammens is the number two after obviously letting Onana leave the club on loan,” transfer reporter Pete O’Rourke told Football Insider .

“They have got issues between the sticks and have kept just one clean sheet this season. If their goalkeeping issues persist, it’s going to be something they look at in January and then in the summer as well.

“Amorim is looking at an experienced goalkeeper to come in and make the spot his own to provide a bit of stability and confidence in the defence.”
