Alan Shearer believes this has to be the season Arsenal end their Premier League title drought. The Gunners have failed to win English football's top-flight title since 2004 and have not won a major trophy since the 2020 FA Cup .

Arsenal have finished runners-up in the Premier League for three consecutive seasons under Mikel Arteta and have made huge progress since the Spaniard was appointed in December 2019. The north London club have gone from a struggling side to a team that has consistently qualified for the Champions League and competed for trophies.

But pressure has been building on Arteta to bring silverware back to the Emirates Stadium after a five-year drought. The Gunners invested heavily during the summer to strengthen their squad and finally deliver a long-awaited league title.

And former Newcastle United striker turned Match of the Day pundit, Shearer, has had his say on what Arsenal should look to achieve in 2024/25 after several near-misses in recent campaigns.

"It has to be Arsenal’s year to win the Premier League," he told Betfair .

"They've spent an absolute fortune, finished second for the last three years so we know, and Arteta knows that the eyes will be on him and he has to win the Premier League this year. When you spend the amount of money that they have, second is no good.

"They're strong, have had a really tough start and they've come through it. That's great credit to Mikel Arteta .

"If you look at the substitutes bench from last season against West Ham in February, compared to now, there's only two players on that bench from what there was last weekend.

"The big difference is that, when Martin Odegaard went off, he was replaced by Zubimendi. That's the difference."

Arsenal currently sit top of the Premier League table and retun to action after the international break away at Fulham on Saturday, October 18 (5:30pm kick-off UK time).
